Its little steps that make big changes
We all have grand sweeping intentions of losing 20 pounds, drinking 1/2 our weight in water every day, getting up at 4 am to achieve greatness, do your miracle morning, eat a balanced breakfast, and more and more and more. WHO CAN DO THAT? Well, I can assure you that it's not me. Matter of fact, that is the list of things I've tried in the last 12 months and failed.
I think some goals are designed to fail. It's just not in many of us to become a "Breatharian" for a week just to fit into a dress that you bought a size too small for a party (and yes, Breatharian is a thing, I looked it up). The question is, can you achieve your goals by not completely messing up your life and setting up an eventual failure? Of course, you can, you just have to bite off a smaller chunk of that goal to get there.
Every time I read 'drink 1/2 your body weight in ounces everyday' I stupidly try it and inevitably drown my kidneys and wash out all my electrolytes in one weekend leaving myself feeling worse on Monday morning than usual. It's just too much. This last month my girlfriend and I decided we would try to be better by just drinking 16oz more water every day. Yep just one bottle of water more a day. We checked in once a week, and you know what? We stuck too it. 16oz more water a day is still 16oz MORE than I was ever doing before and that makes for real tangible health benefits.
So next time you want to lose 20 pounds, how about you just try to lose 2 pounds first. Don't wash your face every night? How about you try to wash up every other night? It's still a step in the right direction.
