A Minimalist’s Guide to Understanding Serums

Serums are potent concentrated doses of active ingredients.

Serums can correct and soften many issues, including dark spots and wrinkles. No pressing skin issues? We all still need an antioxidant serum in the morning to protect from environmental aggressors.

When shopping for serums, look for these ingredients

  • Vitamin C brightens dull skin and lightens dark spots over time, also a powerful antioxidant
  • Retinol, vitamin B3 to stimulate the production of collagen and elastin, proteins in the body that help prevent lines and skin sagging.
  • Peptides to build collagen and strengthen skin
  • Niacinamide to calm redness and decrease inflammation.

Serum Secrets
What step is a serum? Apply your serum after cleansing and toning (mist) and before your moisturizer.

Don’t mix a serum into your moisturizer to save time. Emollients in your moisturizer will kill the ability for your serums to penetrate your skin, making them ineffective.

When do I use a serum? Antioxidant serums, like vitamin C, can be used day or night, but in the morning you will get extra UV and protection from pollution. Retinols become unstable in the sun and should only be used after dark.
